Santa Margarita: Old Fashioned Hamlet Living

Santa Margarita is located in the county of San Luis Obispo in California. It was 1841 after Mexico’s independence when Joaquin Estrada founded the Santa Margarita Rancho. Famous for his “Rancho Hospitality” shows with rodeos, fiestas and BBQs, Estrada sold the ranch after downturns in his personal finances and the economy.

The new owners turned Rancho into an agricultural ranch. In 1889, the Southern Pacific Railroad came to Rancho. Construction began in the area as lots were sold in the town of Santa Margarita, which was officially founded that same year. The town saw a renaissance throughout the 1920s. The town had a hotel, six gas stations, a motor inn, restaurants, pool halls and a baseball team. After the Depression, the War Department built a reservoir on the Salinas River.

By 1956, the town had slowed down and became a hamlet. Today, it’s considered a family and artist community. There is a system of neighborhood, community and joint use parks. All but one of the parks is privately owned, although most are still used publicly. The exception is public grounds O’Neil Regional Park. It has picnic areas, lengthy trails and camping facilities. There’s an equestrian campground and an arena. Lago Santa Margarity has a 11 acre lake that is only a foot deep.

As a family friendly town, there is plenty for everyone to do. There’s indoor climbing at Hangar 18 with cave, master top rope and bouldering. Learn to play tennis or take fitness classes at Spearman Clubs. The Mission San Juan Capistrano is home to the oldest building in California. The Tijeras Creek Golf Club is an 18 hole professional course that’s opened to the public. The Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas will spoil the entire family with meals brought to your seats, a full bar and reserved seating.

The town has its summer concert series every year. All people will need is a beach chair or blankets. The 2013 series saw tributes to Neil Diamond and the Eagles, a night each for classic rock, contemporary country and Motown. Santa Margarita hosts the O.C. Supports Our Troops Charity Golf Tournament. Every New Year’s Eve is the annual “Celebrating Family & Friends” for building community spirit.
