San Luis Obispo History
San Luis Obispo CitySan Luis Obispo is the cultural and commercial hotspot of California’s Central Coast. The city began when Father Junipero Serra founded the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa in 1772 as the fifth installment of California’s 21-mission chain. Named after Saint Louis, a Bishop from 13th Century Toulouse, France, the city was first incorporated in 1856 and later became a Charter City in 1876.
San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation
The San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department works continuously to provide a variety of safe, recreational activities for city residents. The Department believes in “creating community through people, parks, and programs” and provides fitness, health and wellness and educational opportunities its patrons throughout the year.
- Hiking Trails
The City has designated 4,000 acres of land to be used for recreational purposes including hiking trails, mountain biking and scenic walking paths. Working with the Ranger Service, the City ensures that the surrounding land shows the beauty of the central coast, and just 5 miles away from downtown residents can explore wetlands, woodlands and waterfalls. - Sports Program
If you’re looking for a quality sports team, look no further! The Sports Program encourages healthy living by offering a variety of sports leagues including three seasons of Adult Softball. Insurance and equipment expenses are included in the registration fees.

San Luis Obispo EventsThe Parks and Recreation Department also holds variety of events for San Luis Obispo residents, and some collaborative events include the San Luis Obispo Triathlon, Old Fashioned 4th of July and Holiday in the Plaza. The Downtown Association sponsors public events like the Easter Egg Hunt, Snow Night and Howl-o-ween.
