Templeton's story is one of growth. Cattle, fruits, lumber and charcoal vied with the growth of the railroad for supremacy. The town was established in 1886 by the West Coast Land Company and named Crocker for its vice-president. He did not want a town named after him and named it for his infant son, Templeton, instead. The town grew as the railroad did, with coach lines carrying rail passengers southward. There were churches, schools, hotels, a meat market, grocery stores, a shoe store, blacksmiths, drugstore, billiards hall and saloons amidst other businesses. The first home in Templeton, built by Chauncey Phillips, is a bed and breakfast today. The first store, once a two-story building, was removed. One story still stands today near Sixth and Crocker Streets and the other story is McPhee's Grill today. Read more Templeton history at their website.
