Templeton, CA HomesHalf between San Francisco and Los Angeles and 95 miles from Bakersfield is Templeton, CA. The unincorporated community rests on almost eight square miles in San Luis Obispo County, upon which live almost 8,000 people. When residents aren't working in the vineyards, they work in nearby Santa Maria in construction and production, retail and health care. Their kids learn in two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Baseball great Sandy Koufax and actor Josh Brolin are from Templeton.  Templeton's story is one of growth. Cattle, fruits, lumber and charcoal vied with the growth of the railroad for supremacy. The town was established in 1886 by the West Coast Land Company and named Crocker for its vice-president. He did not want a town named after him and named it for his infant son, Templeton, instead. The town grew as the railroad did, with coach lines carrying rail passengers southward. There were churches, schools, hotels, a meat market, grocery stores, a shoe store, blacksmiths, drugstore, billiards hall and saloons amidst other businesses. The first home in Templeton, built by Chauncey Phillips, is a bed and breakfast today. The first store, once a two-story building, was removed.
